Brendon Davids secured his first win in a UCI Sanctioned stage race after another strong performance in the fifth and final stage of Jelajah Malaysia today.
The Oliver’s Real Racing Rider did well to defend his lead in the general classification and did not lose a second to main rival Victor Nino Corredor from Team Sapura Cycling. The South African finished the 132.8km stage, which featured three loops around Alor Setar, Kedah in 44th but in the same group as stage winner Harrif Saleh of Terengganu Cycling Team (3:08:07s).
Davids said: “The boys did a really great job today not letting anyone dangerous up the road. They really have turned themselves inside out for both Ryan (Thomas) and myself this whole week.”
“I really couldn’t have asked for more. Obviously I am very happy to win my first UCI stage race. Jelajah Malaysia has been a real success for the team with Ryan also winning the grey jersey (young riders classification). I hope we will continue to do well in the future.” continued the race winner.
Malaysian riders dominated the fifth stage with Kelantan’s Saufi Mat Senan and TSG’s Nur Amirull Fakhruddin Mazuki coming in second and third. The result saw Amirull securing the green jersey (points classification).
The polka dot jersey (mountains classification) and red jersey (Malaysian classification) went to Sapura duo Jahir Perez and Zawawi Azman. Sapura also won the overall team classification.
