PORT KLANG: The Pulau Indah 180 Cycling Challenge 2018 organised by Central Spectrum Sdn Bhd (CSSB) was cancelled at the eleventh hour due to safety reasons.
CSSB chief executive officer Datuk Mahmud Abbas said the decision was made after the police informed them that they would not be deploying traffic control personnel for the race.
“We found out about the police’s decision and the CSSB, as the organiser, decided to cancel the race for safety reasons,” he told a press conference yesterday.
Mahmud said the third edition of the annual race was then converted into a 80km fun ride, and the organiser also gave assurances that the participation fee would be refunded.
Mahmud said the company was trying to get in touch with the police to find out why the event did not receive the department’s support when all security and safety requirements had been complied with and the Sports Commissioner had also given the green light.
Selangor police chief Datuk Mazlan Mansor said the organisers had delayed submitting the approval letter from the Sports Commissioner, leaving the department with insufficient time to support the event.
He said the organisers only submitted the letter to the police at about 12.45am yesterday, just six hours before the race. — Bernama
