During the past five years, the HensonFuerst Cycling Team has donated $106,885 for the American Diabetes Association’s North Carolina Tour de Cure

After 500 miles and more than $100,000 in donations, the HensonFuerst Cycling Team continues to help steer the way for the American Diabetes Association’s North Carolina Tour de Cure.

Led by attorney Thomas Henson Jr., the team has raised $106,885 during the last five Tours and has been named one of the national Tour de Cure Top 100 Fundraisers for two years.

“The HensonFuerst team has been the Tour de Cure team during the last five years,” said Katie-Rose Darby, manager of fundraising and special events for the North Carolina Tour de Cure. “It is incredible how they outdo themselves when it comes to riders, fundraising, and team spirit year after year.”

The event raises awareness and funds for diabetes prevention and treatment, and the cause is personal for Henson, who was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes at age 9.

“I know firsthand the effects of diabetes and the impacts it can have on a family,” said Henson, who has chaired the event for the last three years. “The Tour de Cure is our way of supporting the American Diabetes Association to make a difference in the lives of others. Supporting our community is a tradition at HensonFuerst, and this is just another way we can give back to our neighbors.”

As the event chair, Henson says he is challenged to grow the event to the proportion it deserves. He said about 600 cyclists participated in the Tour this year, up from 525 cyclists last year, and he hopes next year brings even more cyclists and volunteers to this important event.

“The Tour raises a lot of money to fund diabetes research, education, prevention and advocacy initiatives, and the HensonFuerst team is a driving force behind that success on every level,” Darby said. “We are very happy and thankful to have them as a part of the Tour family, and I look forward to seeing what they have in store for 2013.”

Members of the HensonFuerst Cycling Team also participate in other charitable events, including the Ride of Silence, Ride for the Rock, and various triathlons. The team currently has 40 members and is always looking for more people to join. About the American Diabetes Association’s Tour de Cure

The Tour de Cure is the nation’s largest event to raise money to fight diabetes. Thousands of riders and teams have participated in the event since its inception in 1991. Last year, more than 55,000 cyclists raised almost $18 million to support the ADA’s mission to prevent and cure diabetes and to improve the lives of all people affected the disease.

HensonFuerst Health Initiative

The Tour de Cure is one of many projects and events to which the members of HensonFuerst devote their time. To recognize the importance of giving back to the community, this team of North Carolina personal injury lawyers established the HensonFuerst Health Initiative, a comprehensive plan that encompasses all of the law firm’s community and service efforts. The initiative encourages both community and firm members to prevent injuries, improve health and fitness, and aid organizations committed to bettering health and well-being.
