BMC Alpenchallenge AC01 Lamborghini
The faster bike to get around
Lamborghini designs their F1 cars to handle all sorts of race circuits. Street circuits can be the most demanding as they’re tight with lots of turns. It calls for a ride that is light and stiff for repeated accelerations and maneuverable to cut through the tightest of turns and can stop on a dime. BMC’s Alpenchallenge AC01 frames are designed for urban assaults in much the same way. The two teamed up to produce this Lamborghini Limited Edition BMC Alpenchallenge AC01 bike.
The starting point is BMC’s AC01 IGH frameset. It’s designed for Internally Geared Hubs and disc brakes. This is a fast, fast bike, designed for the commuter who wears the cargo rather than putting it on the bike. With that in mind, the bike has a race-inspired geometry. The tubing is triple-butted aluminum, but there’s still room for comfort thanks to the angle compliance system (ACS) rear triangle and ACS full-carbon fork. The tubing is triple-butted and extensively shaped for both comfort and efficiency. The wheels and frame are optimized for 28-32mm wide 700c tires, which mean both comfort and durability are considered with the wheels as well. The rims are from DT Swiss but finished for Lamborghini. The hubs have a limited edition finish as well, the front from DT Swiss and the rear from SRAM.
The rear is SRAM’s Automatix two-speed hub. As the name implies, it is designed for automatic shifting. There’s a centrifugal clutch in the hub that shifts for you once a speed of approximately eleven miles per hour (17.7kph) is reached. To maximize simplicity, the bike comes outfitted with a Gates Carbon Drive belt, a carbon-fiber, toothed drive mechanism, which is lighter than a chain, lasts twice as long, and needs no maintenance. The chain ring and cog combo is a virtual 55 x 24, which results in a 61.9-inch gear for your low and an 84.2-inch gear for your high. For folks used to double-chain ring setups, it’s like a 39×17 for your low gear and a 53×17 for your high.
Stopping comes from TRP’s Lamborghini-designed hydraulic disc brakes stopping a 160mm rotor in front and back.
Because this is an urban assault vehicle, the bike comes kitted out with BMC’s custom Curana fenders and Sparse lights. The fenders are light and protective as seem permanently attached to the bike, though they can easily and quickly be removed. The same goes for the Sparse lights. The axles have locking quick releases for security.
The paint is also custom. The Lamborghini head badge signifies the unique status of the bike. The white paint is largely understated, with white BMC logos and a black stripe along the top tube. Red brakes, belt, and chain ring bolts subtly add a racing red to the mix, highlighting the purity of speed that Lamborghini delivers.
The BMC Alpenchallenge AC01 Lamborghini Limited Edition Bike is a commuter for those who love the feeling of racing through traffic.
When the BMC team sat down to design a new Alpenchallenge AC01, the goal was clear. The new design had to be faster: faster than all previous BMC urban bicycles, faster than the competition, and faster than you might expect possible of a commuter bicycle with flat bars.
Many bicycles are available in the urban, fitness, commuter speed and flat bar road bike segments, but if you want to pick the fastest bike, the benefits of BMC’s new Alpenchallenge AC01 should be obvious.
