Tern bicycle’s flagship bike has everything it takes to deliver speed and performance.

HELLO Foldies!
This week, we examine the Tern Verge X-10, one of the fastest 20″ folding bikes around.

AWARD-WINNING: Tern’s high-end 10-speed folding bike was awarded for best design and innovation at the 2012 Taipei Bike Show.

Tern bicycles has been around for over a year and they have been winning a lot of awards for their innovative design. Under the Verge platform, a series of high-performance and award-winning hydroformed aluminium framed folding bikes, the X-10 comes as the second-best folding bike in the line-up. This 10-speed speed machine folds in less-than 15 seconds and is also one of the lightest folding bikes in its class.

Weighing-in at 9.7kgs, this machine packs a punch with its awesome drivetrain. You get a 55T front chainring and 36T cogwheel to give you an average speed of 26km/h.

In the right hands, this bike, with its 11 – 36T cogwheels is built to deliver a smoot and seamless ride under any terrain and road conditions.

GRACEFUL UNDER PRESSURE: When least expected, the Kinetix Pro rims and Schwalbe Durano tires deliver a top-notch handling.

What surprised me the most, was the Kinetix pro wheelset and the stock-standard Schwalbe Durano tires. I’ve underestimated them, thinking that it was flimsy and unable to take my weight. With a Godzilla-sized rider like me, the rims and tires were able to withstand our harsh road conditions. Not only that, its capable of yielding 25km/h on the average with little effort.

So, imagine if you are really fit and have the power to weight ratio. This bike will fly!

Now, I’ve seen many overpriced premium folding bikes out there. They are usually packaged with a nice frame, but given crappy components.
On the Verge X-10, there are no compromises. You pay for what you get.

With a pricetag of RM5.8k, I am happy to report that this is one of the best bikes around if you are a cyclist who demands performance.

SUPERB HANDLING: The Tern Verge X-10 delivers in terms of performance and value for money.

Let’s begin with the custom-coloured SRAM X9 rear-derailleur and the X-7 shifters – these are really cool and when it comes to performance, its accurate to the last click.

CUSTOM COLOUR: The specially-made SRAM X-9 rear-derailleur.

Next-up, there’s the specially-made Ergon GX-1 grips that are also colour-coordinated with the Orange/White frame. I can’t complain on the KORE saddle and seatpost that comes with this bike.

WHITE IS THE NEW SEXY: The custom coloured Ergo GX-1 grips.

One of the components that really impressed me was the Kinetix pro wheelset. They are strong and lightweight, and coupled with the Kinetix Pro front and rear hub made by American Classics, you get a really smooth bike that rolls very well. This bike rides really solid and firm.

GRACEFUL UNDER PRESSURE: When least expected, the Kinetix Pro rims and Schwalbe Durano tires deliver a top-notch handling.

It folds very fast too, making it an ideal machine for commuting in the city.

STOPPING POWER: These high-performance Ashima brakes are reliable and as good as it looks.

FOR THE YOUNG AT HEART: The Orange/White colour scheme appeals to younger age group.

Spare the body colour, I really love how the Verge X-10 handles. Its stable and is capable of delivering speed and manouverability. The winner in this bike is its power to weight ratio and excellent design as well as premium components.

Another notch up is the Verge X-20 which is available in very limited quantities. The Verge X-10 is meant for serious folding bike enthusiast who want more and is willing to commit some extra cash for a high-performance bike.
