Southern Zone dominated Sukan Sarawak (SukSar) 2017 road cycling when they made a clean sweep of six gold medals offered in the event held at Jalan FAC Matang in Kuching, Sarawak recently.
The road cycling events offered six events for Road Race, Individual Time Trials for both men and women. There were also two gold medals for Cross Country events for both men and women.
In the men’s Individual Time Trial (20km), Southern Zone’s Muhd Luqman Daniel Mohd Roji won followed by Western Zone’s Mark Wong Wizhe and Central Zone’s Tie Xian Seng completing the podium. Meanwhile, Lai Tsae Yuan took the gold in the women’s 15km Individual Time Trial, with Nurul Izzah Hamdin of Western Zone and Britney Ng of Northern Zone in second and third place.
The men’s 1,000m sprint saw Jackson Kho Jia Xi taking the gold while Lawrence Hii Jin Loong of Central Zone and Muhammad Faiz Jelan were second and third respectively. Continuing her golden streak, Lai Tsae Yuan claimed her third gold in Suksar when she won the women’s 500m sprint, followed by Nurul Izzah and Sharon Yii Chiew Hua in second and third place.
Southern Zone also won Thursday’s two golds in the men’s and women’s criterium through Muhammad Faiz Jelan and Lai Tsae Yuan.
Sukan Sarawak (SukSar) was held from Dec 12-18 as an ideal avenue to groom young champions among both normal and special athletes, aged 19 years and below throughout the state. Sarawak is determined to make SukSar one of the premier sporting events in the state.
For local athletes to qualify for SukSar, they would have to first compete at their respective zone trials and selection. The 4 contingents for SukSar 2017 are Northern Zone (Limbang, Miri and Bintulu), Central Zone (Kapit, Sibu and Mukah), Eastern Zone (Sarikei, Betong and Sri Aman) and Southern Zone (Kuching, Samarahan and Serian).
