Road bike in a foldie. Not a term you’ll hear often, nor have a roadie tell you that the ‘roadie foldie’ can perform as fast as a road bike.
What makes this Tern X18 fast?
I was amazed to find Shimano Ultegra rear derailleurs with 53/39T FSA Gossamer crankset built for Tern on this Verge X18, while the cassette runs on Shimano Capreo with 9-26T, giving you 2×9 speed for the steepest of climbs and the fastest of flats. Yes, I was already thinking of testing this on steeper terrain.
You can be assured of not getting a puncture when going furiously fast on this little speed machine, as the Schwalbe Durano tires have DualCompound Silica casing and RaceGuard puncture protection. You can pump it up to 120 psi for solid ‘road bike tire’ feel too.
Next, the Kinetix Pro X Aero 20” wheels made of alloy, with tall 42 mm profile, and ultra-strong welded construction delivers momentum to keep you rolling as you keep pedalling.
Stiff, responsive and comparatively ‘Light’
The Verge X18 weights in at 10.4kg off the shelf, comparable to an average road bike weight. Mostly made from aluminium, roadies would wonder how much lighter it could be if it were made from carbon fiber.
I was wary of an unstable ‘road bike’ but the Tern’s frame features patented DoubleTruss technology which turns the rear half of the frame into a three dimensional truss, so that it’s more responsive to the force you feed into it, and increases stiffness for better power transfer.
The more I pushed on the pedals, the more speed I got in return from the bike. The roadie in me was thrilled!
Go down low for aero
Yes, it has dropbars. The Kinetix Pro X drop bars are designed specifically to work with the rather unique Syntace VRO stem. Compact drops are ergonomic and especially comfortable for smaller hands.
The stem has ± 47mm of height and reach adjustment so you can dial in the perfect riding position. Further more, the stem can go anywhere from -45 degrees to +90 degrees or even backwards if you want to reduce the reach.
This is especially helpful if you have a petite or taller build.
These adjustable configurations allows you to achieve your aerodynamic position on this roadie foldie.
“Effortless and easy to ride”
Newbies who have never ridden a road bike before took it for a spin, and was excited to find that it was ‘effortless’ and easy to ride. Now that, is indeed the benefit of a powerful design in the Verge X18.
“You gotta have style”
Riding a foldie is about looking trendy and chic. Roll into hipster cafes or restaurants with nostalgic decor. No bikes allowed? No problem, fold it up and roll it under the table. I’m sure your bike will sit under the table, much to the envy of the other patrons.
I’m almost ‘poisoned’ to cross over to the ‘other side’. This Tern Verge X18 is surprisingly impressive and you could easily overtake roadies on this ‘Blue Streak’. Don’t take my word for it, take it out on a spin, and be impressed.
