BANGKOK, 3 March 2017 (NNT) – The Ministry of Transport is promoting walking and cycling as it studies the construction of another five park-and-ride locations in Bangkok.

After presiding over a meeting to promote more walking and cycling in daily life, Transport Minister Arkhom Termpittayapaisith said that the ministry will endeavor to provide bicycle parking at all MRT stations to allow cyclists to transit effortlessly through Bangkok’s subway system.

According to the minister, Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha gave instructions to construct more park-and-ride buildings at five locations in western Bangkok. The ministry is considering various business models for the project, such as having the government hire out the land to contractors or allowing private companies to invest in the buildings.

The ministry is also working with the related agencies to ensure that street vendors do not obstruct bicycle lanes. The Department of Rural Roads is responsible for the safety and availability of footpaths and bicycle lanes in community areas, as well as enforcing regulations that prohibit large vehicles from entering the areas at rush hour.
